by its Japanese name
allows us to connect
intellectually and
philosophically with its
spiritual beginnings.
Our practice of Raku
even with our western
innovations and
aesthetic principles,
is still intimately
connected to the spirit
and traditional
practice of the original
technique.
The word Raku means
"Enjoyment,
Happiness and
Contentment." In
pottery, Raku refers
to the firing process,
which is very
spontaneous and
renders a unique
surface design on
each piece.
